Reviving the Franciscans
Description
Restructuring and conversion of a 19th century building (former Franciscan convent) and creation of an extension to house the André Hamburg exhibition.
The Franciscans, familiar figure of Deauville, will live a mutation, a change of status, becoming a place open on the city. The project establishes a continuity between the past and the future vocation of the place: mediation and transmission. The heritage complex reinvests itself with a new life.
All the challenge is to return this private place in a public place, open, externalizing and belongs to everyone. Because of its monumentality throughout the city, the high portal still open clearly signifies its new status as a public cultural site.
The architectural project sublimates all the historical elements preserved. The main facade of the 19th century convent is preserved and extended by a contemporary extension by a work without break. Renovated and cleared from the protective wall, the set is placed on a new square, mixing plant and mineral.
The organization scheme of the building is intentionally simple, articulated around a large vertical axis and a large horizontal plane, in which the visitor can identify and move easily. The Franciscans are recomposed around two large squares that prolong the history of the place. The square of the original cloister mirrors that of the exhibition hall, a new structure comparable in geometry and architecture. This element naturally complements the old. The two structures, cloister and exhibition hall, are covered with a very contemporary intention, one by a large monumental chandelier, the other by a central well which allows to welcome or to conceal the natural light according to the exhibitions.
